What the Looking Glass does, how to read the results, and what we deliberately do not publish.
What is a Looking Glass?
It is an open tool that lets you run queries from inside a provider's network. You are looking from 3C1B's backbone routers rather than from your own machine, so you can tell whether we see a prefix at all, which path we see it through, and whether a problem is on your side or somewhere in between.
Why are there five routers?
Because the same prefix does not look the same at every POP. Our Ankara router may reach a destination via Türk Telekom while our Sofia router hears the very same prefix from six different neighbours and picks an entirely different path. When you are diagnosing a routing problem, that difference is usually what matters.
What does RPKI "valid" mean?
RPKI cryptographically records which autonomous system is authorised to announce a given IP block. "valid" means the announcing AS matches a signed ROA; "invalid" indicates a possible hijack, and such routes are rejected on our backbone. "unknown" simply means no ROA has been published for that block — it is not an error.
Why are next-hop and interface details missing?
We withhold them deliberately. Internal next-hop addresses, interface and VLAN names describe our backbone topology, and there is no legitimate benefit in publishing that through an open tool. Internal paths are shown as "[internal]". The ASN and IP of our external neighbours are already public information, so those we do show.
Why is the route age not shown?
How long a route or session has been up is operational information; during an attack we would rather not answer the question "did the session drop?" for the outside world. Everything your query actually needs — the path, the origin AS, the RPKI state and why a path was selected — is visible without it.
